CollegeBored: The End is in Sight!

December 25, 2018

By Jeffrey Gu

Fa la la la la la, la la la laaaaaa... (I literally can’t count; it took singing this in my head

six times before I figured out how many la’s there were, and another three times before I decided on where to put the dang comma.)

Christmas break is upon us! Teachers are assigning last minute tests and projects, snowy

weather is here (finally) and holiday songs will probably be playing on the speaker system

tomorrow.

And January 1st has been creeping up on us, too. Whether or not you celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas, you definitely only have twelve days left until college applications are due. Twelve days. 288 hours. 17,280 minutes.

We’re all in different places right now. Some have been accepted into the colleges they

applied to early (CONGRATULATIONS!! YOU DESERVE THIS SO MUCH!!). Some have

been rejected from their earlies and are working on the last few regular decision applications (It’s

ok! Don’t let that one college get to you – you’re an amazing person, you deserve the world and

you’ll find the right college during the regular decision cycle!). Some didn’t apply early

anywhere and have been steadily working toward the regular decision deadline (Keep it up –

only a few days more and you’ll be done!). Some have already finished submitting all their

applications, and are ready to kick back over break (Look at how on top of everything you are!

Go you! Take some time to relax over the holidays – you deserve it). Some will have

procrastinated up until now and will be spending the next few days grinding out multiple

applications (The road ahead looks daunting, but you’ll pull through! I believe in you – keep

your head up and write those essays!).

Wherever each one of us is, we all have twelve days left until we’re free to do whatever we want for the rest of high school. Twelve days left until we can leave this little hellhole called college application season behind us.

So whether you’ve already finished everything, or whether you’ll be cranking out an

application every two days, take a second to pause. Breathe. Reflect on all that you’ve done and

on all that you’ll have to do.

We’ve been agonizing over these applications for months now. Working through our own

college search, exploring what defines us and trying to package and condense ourselves into a

handful of activities and a few hundred words. We’ve researched colleges, drafted essays,

revised openings and closings and everything in between, tailored our application to each school,

maybe even copy pasted a few essays from one college to another. And now, the end is finally,

finally in sight.

Whatever you’ve written and whatever you’ll pull together in this final stretch, once

everything is submitted, it’ll be out of your hands. The merits of your four years of high school –

essays, recommendations, transcripts, test scores and all – will be sent off to be evaluated, and in

a few months we’ll log into our college applicant portals to view those fateful decisions. We ultimately can’t control how admissions officers will decide. But we can do our very

best to make our applications as amazing as we are.

So put everything you’ve got into whatever work you have left to do and wow those

colleges! No matter how much you have left to do, whether it be a few scattered edits or ten more essays, you’ve already come this far, struggled for so long – don’t give up now. You have twelve days left. 288 hours. 17,280 minutes. Make the most of them.
