Lexington High School boasts a list of 148 clubs and activities that continues to grow with each passing year. Whether students hope to find like-minded peers or explore new areas of interest, the school’s many clubs are the place to start.

From illustration to photography, LHS has a promising pool for artists.

“Illustration club is a place where artists of all levels can come to participate in occasional drawing challenges, collaborations, trades, quiet drawing time, and most importantly, snacks!” Waka Okuda, a sophomore, said.

For those more interested in the performing arts, a similarly diverse set of options are available. Dancers can join Dance Club or seek more specific styles like Bhangra or K-pop. Drama and Slam Poetry also offer options for non-musical performers.

LHS is also home to a host of successful academic teams. Last year, the Science Bowl team won nationals for a second consecutive year, and both the Robotics and Economics teams placed first in international competitions. Despite their formidable reputations, however, all students are welcome to join.

“The [economics] club is not only about competitions - we're open to anyone looking to learn more about economics," Jeb Jacobs, a senior and co president of the Economics Club, said.

For more speech-based activities, Model UN, Mock Trial, and Debate Club are also available.

“[Debate] teaches people how to think critically in a time pressed environment, research skills, and a lot about history, foreign relations, the government, politics, fun facts and such,” Emily Qiu, a junior debater, said.

Activism is also a strong area of interest for many LHS students. The American Civil Liberties Union Club, Gender and Sexuality Alliance and African American and Latino Scholars are a few examples of organizations that raise awareness on social issues.

Outside of these larger categories, many miscellaneous interests are also represented by the impressive list of clubs. All students are encouraged to attend LHS’ annual club fair to explore and sign up for clubs that may be of interest.

With more than 25 music programs and classes, LHS offers students a wide variety of musical options ranging from in-school bands and orchestras, to independent chamber groups.

“Wind ensemble is such a diverse community and you feel really loved. The reason I do music is because it’s such a kind, encouraging group of people,” Jonathan Li, a junior, said. Wind Ensemble, as well as other large performing groups at LHS, is offered as a class and brings together musicians of all grades and abilities.

For those who don’t play instruments, LHS is also home to nine a cappella groups. Each group holds auditions in the fall for any students interested in joining. These groups all participate in bi-annual concerts know as “jams,” where they perform for students and community members.

With freshman, junior varsity and varsity divisions in more than 20 sports, Lexington also strives to encourage student participation across varying levels of commitment and expertise. Teams have historically experienced competitive success and are on the track (pun intended) for more this year.

“[Cross country] doesn’t require much skill going in, and is a great way to meet people from other grades and explore the town,” Adam Bernstein, a junior, said.

Even swimming, which is commonly thought of as an individual sport, offers team members a sense of community.

“I remember we faced a team that had two or three really strong swimmers that outswam even our best. But in those events, despite their first place finish, we were able to secure second, third, and fourth place, resulting in more points and therefore the win,” Bill Wu, a senior on the swim team, said. Here, teamwork proves to be the ultimate winner.
