Since the fall sports season began in September, the Lexington High School varsity girls field hockey team has been busy with their schedule, playing against twenty other schools over a span of two and a half months.
Members practice around two hours a day for six days every week. Players are often seen doing their homework after a game, before returning home in the late evening.
“I think we have a really great team dynamic this year,” Bess Lawrence, a senior and member of the varsity field hockey team, said. “The majority of us have played together for a while now, so we've gotten to know one another well. Everyone is super supportive, which I think helps us be more cohesive on the field.”
One activity the team does is called “pump-up buddies”. Each team member is assigned one other team member. Each pair then surprises each other with snacks and an encouraging note before the start of a game. This not only helps boost the players’ morale, but it also fosters strong friendships within the team.
“We have talked a lot about having grit and working hard for 60 minutes each day we compete,” Coach Laura Galopim said. “At this point in the season, they are showing that. They can be a tough team to beat when it all comes together.”
The varsity field hockey team has already played against 14 other schools around Massachusetts. The current record stands at eleven wins, two ties, and one loss. The most recent games were a five-one against Belmont, on Oct. 17, as well as another win against Waltham on Oct. 22.
