Joining the proliferation of new a capella groups is The Sharp Asian Minors, a group founded for non-singers. Juniors Michelle Tu and Rosanna Jiang decided to create a fun group unaffiliated with the official Lexington High School a capella program.
The members hope that their lack of emphasis on singing ability will foster greater accessibility for students to unwind through music.
“We think that music should be for everyone and that we can all benefit from making music and relieving stress through music, despite lack of professional training,” Tu said. “That’s why we accept everyone. It’s not exclusive to just singers.”
The group currently has ten members. They have been meeting since September and run rehearsals as often as they can. To choose songs, members vote in a poll.
“Once we [founded] it, we started getting more members,” Tu said. “Then we got a little more serious and started doing rehearsals together.”
Not surprisingly, the group chooses music for enjoyment.
“We mostly just sing silly songs to have fun,” Tu said. “Some songs that we have been practicing include the ‘Derp song,’ ‘Man’s Not Hot,’ ‘Jingle Bells’ for the holidays and the ‘Narwhal song.’”
The group is a source of community for its members.
“We always laugh a lot and joke around with each other,” Antoinette Tan, a junior, said.
The Sharp Asian Minors do not envision becoming an official group in the future, but plan to pursue other ventures.
“We don’t plan on being in Jam... Our goal isn’t to be really good singers and make really good music. It’s just to have fun," Tu said.
