The Muskrat: LHS Replaces Performing Arts Programs with TikTok Dance Team

Updated: Apr 1, 2020

Lexington High School has replaced all current dance clubs and the theatre program with a TikTok dance and POV team. The dance team, known as the Lit Lodge, will perform and compete at TikTok conventions held every few months in the surrounding states. They will be accompanying the TikTok POV team known as the Clout Cottage, who perform monologues up to one minute long.

“The replacements are part of an effort to raise school spirit. In the last Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 100% of students reported spending more than six hours on the TikTok app each day, so we’re really excited to see how the student body will embrace the initiative,” Angela Barker, the LHS administrator who spearheaded the project, said.

Participants interested in trying out for the Lit Lodge must demonstrate their competence in dances such as “Renegade,” “Say So,” and “Cannibal” in order to join the team, which is co-captained by sophomore Charlotte D’Angelo and junior Chase River.

“We wanted to start a TikTok dance team to participate in dance battles and competitions against all the best Tiktok dancers across the nation. We also wanted to grow our clout. Groups on TikTok are doing so well right now,” D’Angelo said.

Many students were excited to learn about this new opportunity.

“I’ve always loved learning new TikTok dances! Why didn’t you say so earlier? I didn’t even notice, without you telling me, I would have no punches left to roll with. I gotta stay focused. I want it, so say so,” Hodeling Yaley, a junior, said.

Prospective dancers are optimistic about their chances and are motivated to try their best. Maddison Cray, a senior trying out for the team, speculated about her upcoming performance of “Cannibal.”

“I know I’m talented. Whenever they tell me my dancing’s pretty, that’s when the hunger will really hit me. I’ll make their little heart go pitter-patter, I’ll put everyone else’s livers on a platter. I’m going to be a star,” Cray said.

Others see Lit Lodge as a way to build a community.

“Collaborating is really big right now. I’m at 600 TikTok followers right now, and I think that by the end of the season, I could have at least 250k,” Pixie D’Angel, a freshman who plans to try out for the team, said.

Clout Cottage, the accompanying acting troupe, is led by Karen Baseeq, a senior with 6.9 million TikTok followers. Members of Clout Cottage compete by either accumulating points for performing short dialogues or getting judged on their delivery skills by loudly ranting to a bathroom mirror.

“I’m really hoping that being in Clout Cottage will allow me to jumpstart my career in standup comedy. I’ve only made it to the For You page twice, but I’m optimistic about the future,” Jimothy Fallon, a sophomore, said.

Clout Cottage and Lit Lodge welcome every student to attend tryouts in Room 140 during the week of Apr. 6-10.

“Preference will be given to those wearing Brandy Melville, American Eagle, and Urban Outfitters. Hydroflasks are encouraged. We can’t wait to see everyone perform!” D’Angelo said.
